RHF is developing a prefabricated garden which can be adapted to any size of outdoor area, from a plot as small as eight square feet, as long as it’s in a sunny area. The concept is like a raised bed garden on a trailer and the basic premise is to “keep it simple.”
The setup relies on the use of individual grow bags set on trays which can control the amount water and nutrients being delivered to the plants, all placed on a support system which keeps everything above ground level.
Our current study includes both herbs and vegetables, and has about 45 different vegetable/herbs included, primarily to determine what’s easy to grow, what’s hard to grow. The success rate greatly exceeds the failure rate at this stage.
In the fall of this year, we will be placing test gardens at various sites in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast to get feedback on degree of difficulty to use, harvest abundance, and surprises that may have popped up.
Given the go ahead from the fall activity, the intent will be to offer this garden to all families with children who have expressed interest. If you would like to be part of our initial testing please fill out the form below.
We will also offer it as a community package whereby multiple families can cooperate on garden upkeep and share in the bounty.
Many positive results besides food have been observed as the result of having community garden.
Studies have shown that community gardens are associated with an increase in organizing around other neighborhood issues such as crime prevention etc. It leads to more neighbor to neighbor assistance in times of general need.
